Because of its location and beautiful beaches it is a perfect place to either stay local or use to launch numerous adventures.

You are close to many things. There are a number of large resorts and lots of rentals, condos, villas and apartments. There are many small convenience stores and many local shops and restaurants.

Many of the beaches are natural beaches however many have white sand areas for children and swimmers. This is a great place for snorkelers especially if you want to see sea turtles. Activities in the area include diving, snorkeling, game fishing and the Akumal Ecological Center. There is Tulum Ruins and there is the town Tulum. The town Tulum is around 5 kilometers south of the Tulum Ruins.

The town is small but has many restaurants, bars and hotels. There are some nice hotels in the area and many miles of white sandy beaches. There are of course villas, cabana, apartments and houses to rent by the day or week. Much of the stuff you will find in the shops in Playa can be found here but not in quite as abundance. Also the beach resorts are secluded and not as busy as Playa del Carmen. Tours are a great option, they usually pick you up and drop at the door of your hotel either in Cancun or the Riviera Maya: Xcaret.

Set in a beautiful bayside location, this eco-archaeological park focuses on Mayan culture, with a restored Mayan archaeological site, traditional dance shows and a recreation of a Mayan village. The park has a host of other attractions as well, including a jaguar exhibit, a deer refuge, a regional wildlife farm, butterfly breeding facilities, a coral aquarium, a marine turtle conservation program, a wide range of flora, and opportunities for swimming and snorkeling.

Another great vacation feature of the Riviera Maya is all the fun and adventure it offers families. Water sports abound here. Just offshore along the Riviera Maya is the Playacar reef. This is one of the largest barrier reefs in the world, second only to the great barrier reef of Australia and a lot closer to home! Snorkeling and scuba diving rank high on everyone's "to do" list that visit here. The jungle here offers cenotes which are caves that offer even more unique diving and snorkeling experiences.

In addition there are zip lines, quad tours, hiking, biking and ecological parks for your family to enjoy. Of course safety is always a primary concern for any family vacation. To many inexperienced travelers, the word Mexico doesn't seem to belong in the same sentenence with the word "safe".

Aktun Chen covers almost acres of rainforest and is home to 3 caves with underground rivers. An easy walking tour of the main cave lasts about an hour and allows visitors to witness spectacular geological formations. Walking through the park's jungle paths offers the chance to glimpse some of the area's wildlife. Xaman Ha Aviary is an open-air sanctuary in Playacar providing a natural habitat to over 60 species of tropical birds.

Meander the sanctuary's paths and trails and see if you can spot toucans, macaws, flamingos, egrets, herons and other beautiful birds of the area. Visitors can learn about its diverse wildlife and participate in conservation projects. Ecological tours of the reserve are offered, as well as kayak tours and fly fishing. Note: In the ecological parks of the Mayan Riviera the use of regular sunscreens is prohibited for swimming and other water activities because oils can be damaging to the water-life ecology.
